One of the core missions of the Provost's Office is to support Wake Forest University faculty in their research and scholarly endeavors. In support of this mission, a number of funding opportunities are available through the Provost's Office. The Academic and Community Engagement Fellowship Program (ACE Fellows)

The ACE Fellows Program, in conjunction with the Teaching and Learning Center and the Dean of the College, provides support for selected faculty fellows interested in incorporating service-learning into their courses. The Program provides stipends of $1,250 as well as services, including teaching development, for faculty to enhance teaching and enrich learning. The deadline for application is October 1. Chambers Fund

The Chambers Fund is designed to provide a source of funding for projects and courses that encourage undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools as well as faculty in entrepreneurial activities using the Internet or electronic commerce. The Fund for Ethics, Leadership, and Civic Responsibility

The fund is designed to help faculty, staff and students develop curriculum and extracurricular programs in ethics, leadership, and civic responsibility. A special focus of the ELCR is on connecting theoretical ideals with pragmatic practices. Eligibility for fund awards is restricted to members of the Wake Forest University community. The evaluation committee anticipates that most applicants will be members of the faculty, but staff may also apply. Students who are sponsored by faculty or staff are eligible to participate, as well. The deadlines for application are October 1 and March 1.  ELCR application form: (PDF) (DOC) and guidelines.

Faculty/Student Engagement Fund

The Faculty/Student Engagement Fund reimburses faculty members who host students outside of the classroom. All members of the undergraduate faculties may be reimbursed for up to $125 per class or $8 per student, whichever is less. To access the Faculty/Student Engagement Fund, simply submit a completed Expenditure Voucher listing the date of the event, the amount of reimbursement desired, and the number of students involved to Beth Hoagland, Business Manager, in the Provost’s Office. Faculty Student Lunch Program

Faculty eating lunch with undergraduate students on the meal plan may dine for free in the Fresh Food Company and the Magnolia Room. In order to participate in the program, faculty must request an inter-department charge slip at the cashier's desk and write "Provost's Office" on the budge cod line. Additionally, "lunch with students," and the faculty member's name and department must be written in the margins or on the back of the form.

Mid-Year Emergency Funding Requests

Beginning in the fall of 2009, there will be a new process for addressing mid-year emergency funding needs that fall outside the annual budget process. All requests must be submitted through a Mid-Year Emergency Funding Request Form by a Dean, Department Head, or Associate Provost who will be responsible for using all available funds before seeking help from the Provost. The Nathan and Julie Hatch Prize for Academic Excellence

The Provost’s Office announces a faculty development award to support a week of research and writing in late June 2010 (dates TBA) at the Summer Research Institute conducted by Harris Manchester College at Oxford University. Room and board expenses as well as transportation will be covered. All faculty from the undergraduate college and the Schools of Business, Divinity, Medical, and Law are eligible to apply. The award will be made to the applicant whose research project, regardless of discipline, shows the most scholarly promise and best demonstrates the pivotal role a week of sustained research and writing, with access to the renowned Bodleian Library, will have on its achievement.

Provost's Fund for Faculty Travel

The Provost's Fund for Faculty Travel provides supplementary travel support for faculty participating in an academic conference (by presenting or discussing a paper or chairing a session) or conducting other research-related travel approved by the department chair or dean.

Provost's Fund for Academic Excellence

The Provost's Fund for Academic Excellence provides 2:1 matching grant of up to $10,000 for endeavors that showcase and reinforce Wake Forest's teacher-scholar ideal. Priority is given to proposals that facilitate cross-disciplinary intellectual engagement between faculty and students and those that recognize the academic excellence of our faculty and develop scholarly themes and emerging academic and pedagogical issues. Funding can be spread over one or two years. The fund will provide a match for speakers, workshops, artists-in-residence, tutorial grants and conferences that facilitate intellectual community at Wake Forest University by supporting research, teaching, curricular development, and/or creativity.  The deadlines for application are October 1 and April 1. Provost's Grant for Academic Excellence

Provost's Grant for Academic Excellence provides 2:1 matching grants up to $1,500 that support small scholarly, pedagogical and creative efforts that faciliate academic excellence. Faculty are invited to submit a 2 page proposal that: describes the actual project and its intellectual significance; details anticipated participants and commitments already secured; and explains goals and expected outcomes. The proposal must be signed by the dean and the applicant's chair if submitted from a College faculty member. There is no deadline for this application process; awards will be made on a rolling basis. For more information contact Michele Gillespie, gillesmk@wfu.edu.

The Science Research Fund (SRF)

The SRF sponsors projects in the natural and mathematical sciences.  Funds up to $10,000 ($15,000 if applying for IIEF) can be requested for research supplies, maintenance of essential equipment, travel, or technical personnel. Applicants must demonstrate that travel, if budgeted, is essential to the project. In addition, a matching contribution or cost sharing from their department to cover some of the travel costs is encouraged. Defrayal of professional society dues is not allowed. The project period is 1 year, with the possibility of a 1-year, no-cost extension.  Eligibility is restricted to full-time, tenured or tenure-track science faculty and research support staff with adjunct faculty appointments on the Reynolda Campus. Nontenure-track faculty may be considered, if their appointments continue through the award year.  The fall deadline for applications is the second Friday in October, and the spring deadline is third Friday in February.  More information

The Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Research Fund (SBE)

The Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences Research Fund supports projects conducted in departments that include but are not limited to Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Education, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Social, behavioral, and economic sciences proposals from faculty in the Law, Babcock, and Calloway Schools are also accepted.  Funds up to $10,000 can be requested for research supplies, maintenance of essential equipment, travel, or technical personnel. Applicants must demonstrate that travel, if budgeted, is essential to the project. In addition, a matching contribution or cost sharing from their department to cover some of the travel costs is encouraged.
