Congratulations to the Translational Science Center as one of the first recipients of strategic plan center funding! After reviews by an external panel and the Research Advisory Council, this center has received five years of funding. Its proposal demonstrated that collaboration would enhance research and education, strengthen intellectual community among the departments and schools and bolster academic reputation.
Under the direction of Daniel Kim-Shapiro (Physics), the Translational Science Center will focus on the promotion and maintenance of functional health as people age. Three of four pilot projects will study the effects of interventions on cognitive function and physical activity. The center team includes medical staff, behavioral scientists and basic scientists who will develop interventions to improve physical and cognitive health in aging populations while using observations from interventions to plan new studies. The center also proposed a new undergraduate minor as well as a graduate certificate program.
