Opening Convocation 2009: Engaging Minds, Empowering Communities
On September 17, 2009 Wake Forest University held Opening Convocation. The theme of the event was “Engaging Minds, Empowering Communities,” and Provost Jill Tiefenthaler used the occasion to announce the launch of the new Wake Forest University Institute for Public Engagement. Tiefenthaler also recognized the plethora of ways that Wake Forest University students, faculty, staff, and community partners contribute to the global community through public engagement. Suzanne Reynolds, Professor of Law, addressed attendees, and and the University bestowed the Schoonmaker, Waddill, Reinhardt, and Divinity School Service awards. In addition to honoring public engagement at the University, Opening Convocation marked Wake Forest’s 175th anniversary. Following the event, a community picnic was held in Reynolda Hall.
