The Kulynych Family Omicron Delta Kappa Award

Petro Kulynych

Petro Kulynych

The Kulynych Family Omicron Delta Kappa Award was established to recognize an outstanding faculty member who bridges the gap between the classroom and student life.  The award is named to honor the life and contributions of Wake Forest University Lifetime Trustee Petro Kulynych and his family.

Mr. Kulynych was born to Ukranian immigrants and grew up in Pennsylvania’s coal mining region.  He left the area after high school to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he helped build the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Mountains.  After serving in World War II, Kulynych used his GI benefits to attend accounting school.  He subsequently went to work as a bookkeeper at a small hardware company in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.  This company grew into what is now Lowe’s, and Kulynych became one of the company’s top executives before retiring in 1983. Mr. Kulynych has founded and contributed to many philanthropic organizations in western North Carolina, including the Petro Kulynych Foundation, the Kulynych Family Foundation and the Kulynych Family Life Center.
