Bio
As a member of the Provost’s Office team, Matthew provides strategic leadership and support for the development, review, and implementation of University policies and standards related to faculty matters. He coordinates with the counsel’s office, human resources, the Faculty Senate, schools, and other University partners. As an advisor to the Provost on faculty and organizational matters, he represents the Provost in shared governance activities, assigned University committees, and institutional transition planning efforts.
Matthew has worked at Wake Forest since 2008 and currently serves as Teaching Professor of Law & Ethics in the School of Business. His leadership roles in the university include past service as associate provost for strategic initiatives, associate dean for MBA programs, director of an academic center in the School of Business, and chair of the University Priorities Committee. He also served as president of the Wake Forest Faculty Senate in 2021–2022 and was part of the university’s COVID-19 planning team.
Matthew has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, including the “Ideas Worth Teaching” Award from the Aspen Institute in 2017, and he was named the 2015 Charles M. Hewitt Master Teacher by the Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB). He is a past president of ALSB, which has more than 800 members and publishes three peer-reviewed academic journals. He recently completed service as the senior uniformed lawyer in the Civil Air Patrol, the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, where he led a team of 180 lawyers and provided direct support to the national commander of the 70,000-member organization. He is also an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church. He received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University, a master of divinity from Duke University, and the juris doctor from Wake Forest.
