Supporting our students and community after Hurricane Helene

Dear Colleagues,

As we witness the widespread, overwhelming destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, our hearts go out to all who have been affected. The storm’s ruinous path has deeply devastated communities across the Southeast, and we are still learning the full extent of the damage and suffering.

We know that many in our own community—our students, faculty, and staff—have been personally impacted by this disaster. In light of this reality, I know all of us will offer empathy, flexibility, and understanding as we navigate this difficult time together.  

Please be mindful of the individual consequences this situation may have for some of our students. I urge you to extend grace and flexibility wherever possible. Whether adjusting deadlines, offering alternative learning arrangements, or simply being a listening ear, your compassion will make a meaningful difference in our students’ ability to manage both academic and personal responsibilities during this time of crisis.

You have the full support of your deans, as well as my office and myself in this commitment. There are a variety of additional resources available too. The University will soon launch a website with more information and resources to assist those affected by the storm. Staff from Campus Life and our various schools have already begun personal outreach to over 200 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from the hardest-hit areas throughout the region. If you are concerned about yourself or others, please remember that you can submit a referral to Wake Forest’s CARE Team for additional assistance.
